Fort Road, city centre
A wide, low-walled fort still in daily use as a neighbourhood: mosques, Jain temples and old gateways sit inside the ramparts, and a slow walk of the outer wall takes about an hour.
Inside Belagavi Fort
A 12th-century Jain temple named for the lotus carved into its ceiling. The black stone pillars and the Neminatha idol are the highlight; shoes off, photography is usually allowed outside.
Old town
Considered the city's oldest Shiva shrine and the starting point of many local pilgrimage rounds. Busiest on Mondays and during Shivaratri, quiet and cool early in the morning.
Halaga, about 12 km out
Karnataka's second legislature building, used for the winter session. The scale and the landscaped approach make it a popular photo stop; interiors are not open to casual visitors.
About 60 km north
The Ghataprabha river drops over a wide rock shelf beside an old cotton-mill town, with a hanging bridge across the gorge. Strongest between July and October.
Near Yadwad, about 55 km
A two-step fall on the Markandeya river reached by a short trail and steps through scrub forest. Wear grippy shoes and go in the morning, as the last stretch gets slippery.

Belagavi sits at about 750 metres on the edge of the Western Ghats, which is why the air is cooler than most of north Karnataka and why the countryside west of the city turns properly green in the monsoon. It grew as a garrison town, so the tidy Camp area with its bakeries and straight roads feels quite different from the packed lanes of Khade Bazaar a few kilometres away.
The city also works as a base. Goa's beaches, the Kolhapur temples, the Gokak and Godachinmalki waterfalls and the hill roads towards Jamboti are all within a comfortable day's drive, which makes a two-night stay more rewarding than a stopover.
